How to Get the Most Out of Your Yoga Class?

For some, yoga is the perfect antidote for a stressful life, rife with job worries, money problems and relationship issues. For others, the idea of sitting in a heated room on a mat with others while attempting to arrange your limbs in complicated positions, while meditating could seem like a colossal waste of time. The latter would do better to rethink their position. If someone is interested, he or she can gain a lot from a yoga class.

Be Open-Minded: Don't Go to Your yoga Class Expecting to Be Bored

If you walk into a yoga class with a cynical attitude, expecting it to be a waste of time, then it will be. The most important thing to remember before even setting foot into a classroom is to be open to the idea of the benefits of yoga. Don't feel too self-conscious around the other students.

Also, it's important to remember that others in your class may also feel a bit strange trying to figure out the positions, so know that you're not the only on in your yoga class that may have trouble keeping up. Also, if you are having trouble, as with any endeavor, ask for help - go up to the instructor and ask her to go over some of the steps with you.

After class, go up to some of your classmates and see if any of them could walk you through some of the positions, as well - it's a great way to cover what you've gone through and a great way to start making new friends.

If in Doubt, a Little Research Never Hurt Anyone

There is tons of material on yoga, online and in print. Go to the bookstore and thumb through some of the books devoted to the practice. Purchasing a book before your yoga class is also not a bad idea. If you're a novice, but not embarrassed by that, then a good book to suggest would beYyoga for Dummies (For Dummies, 1999) by Georg Feuerstein and Larry Payne.

The good thing about a book like this (all the books "for Dummies" are great in respect) is the easy, layman language. It's a good book to have for your yoga class - a sort of textbook, if you will that will clue you in on the importance of staying in shape for your yoga class, the different positions, as well as, uses for yoga, for everyday life outside the yoga class. Armed with a book like this, your yoga class will not be so intimidating.

Taking a yoga class will do wonders for your body and your spirit. No longer just a trendy pastime for yuppies, medical doctors are starting to study the health benefits of yoga for patients (including people living with cancer or AIDS). A yoga class can be a positive experience for anyone - as long as he or she is willing to participate with a healthy, accepting attitude.
